Peter E. Penner, evangelist, missionary and writer, was born in the Crimea, South Russia in October 1870. He was one of six children and while still a child his family immigrated to the United States. They travelled as pioneers to Parker, South Dakota. It was here that Penner spent his childhood. In 1885 he was baptized by Heinrich Adrian and became a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church. He married Verena Geifer on June 22, 1906. They had met while Penner attended Bethel College Academy. He then went on to attend the Bible school "Light and Hope" in Cleveland, Ohio. Here Penner came under the influence of S.F. Sprunger who was principal at that time. In 1906 Penner was ordained to the ministry of evangelism. During his years of service, Penner wrote many tracts on the Bible in English, German, and Spanish. He had a special interest in Latin America and dedicated much work to establishing the John 3:16 mission there. In 1926 Penner's wife died. After suffering many years of ill health, Peter E. Penner died of cancer on July 30, 1945.
